Sims Metal Management moved up ten spots, to number 63 in the world, from 2010’s Global Top 100 List. Sims Metal Management remains committed to the voluntary disclosure of its key sustainability performance for all stakeholders. All divisions are tasked with making yearly improvements in the areas of safety, environmental management, energy and water use reduction, carbon emissions, waste generation, and the many other components that together form the basis of the Company’s efforts to become one of the world’s most sustainable businesses.
Group Chief Executive Officer Dan Dienst commented, “It is a great honour to be included for the third year on the Global Top 100 Most Sustainable Corporations list, particularly as the only recycling company recognized. Every facility manager, regional president or general manager has a responsibility not only to the Company and employees, but also to the communities in which we operate. The Company has a responsibility to ensure that our operations are managed in a responsible manner with regard to the health, safety and environment of these communities. We strive to meet our sustainability goals, not only by the inherent sustainable nature of our business as recyclers, but also by making sure we are doing all we can to improve energy efficiency, maintain proper storm water controls, use alternative energy sources and continue our internal R&D to reduce the land-filling of our waste products. Operating in a sustainable, environmentally responsible manner and being profitable are not mutually exclusive propositions. We can do well and do good at the same time.”
The Global Top 100 Most Sustainable Corporations list identifies companies which consistently demonstrate superior leadership and performance on a range of environmental, social and governance policies relative to their industry peers. Companies on the list are considered better equipped than their competitors to thrive and succeed in the longer term due to the sustainable approach used to manage their business.
Other criteria used in compiling the list include ethical and responsible decision making, recognising the interests of stakeholders, respecting the rights of shareholders, and communication with customers, investors, regulators and policymakers. Taken together these factors mark the company out as one of the most sustainable enterprises in the world, both environmentally and in terms of financial performance.
